Used when it can answer a clinical question.
Uroflowmetry measures how quickly urine flows, the amount passed and the shape of the flow curve. It is commonly used when symptoms include a weak stream, straining, hesitancy, intermittency or a feeling of incomplete emptying. It does not diagnose a sexual-health condition by itself.

Automated Uroflowmetry System
A dedicated uroflowmetry system that records urine flow rate, volume and the shape of the flow curve during private voiding.
Why it may be requested
- Measure urinary flow rate objectively
- Support assessment of lower urinary tract symptoms
- Help decide whether further urinary testing is needed
- Monitor selected conditions over time
What usually happens
- You arrive with a comfortably full bladder when advised
- You urinate privately into a specialised flow meter
- The device records flow rate, volume and pattern
- Results are interpreted alongside symptoms and, when needed, post-void residual measurement
Preparation and safety
A very small urine volume can make the result less useful, so follow bladder-filling instructions provided by the clinic.
Bring a current list of medicines and relevant reports. The clinical team can tell you whether fasting, bladder preparation or medication precautions apply to your test.
This page is educational and cannot determine the cause of an individual symptom. Treatment choices, prescription medicines and tests require a clinician who knows your history. If symptoms are sudden, severe or accompanied by an emergency warning sign, seek urgent medical care.
